The end of January, beginning of February can be a difficult time of year. As beautiful as winter can be, short days, lack of sufficient sunlight, and cold temperatures can greatly affect our mood and outlook. Maintaining our energy and positive spirit this time of year can be challenging.

How do we make the best of this time of year? First by reminding yourself that this is just one part of the year, that this downtime or slower time is necessary. During this time with less sun, less movement, we can rest, reflect, plan, learn, incubate and manifest our desires for the rest of the year. We can take time to utilize some practices that serve us such as gratitude, intention, and choosing a new perspective.

Gratitude

In the winter, it is especially easy to find something to be thankful about – heat, blankets, warm fires, good books, movies, candles, comfort food. Use indoor time for meditation or self care. Bubble baths are nice in the winter months.

Intention

What would you like to do with your shorter days? Are you indoors more, and if so, what can you do to make the time useful. You could clean closets to clothe those in need or redecorate a room. You could learn a new skill; sign up for a class (in person or online). Make an “ice bucket” list of cool (literal and figurative) things to do before the winter ends such as learning to cross country ski, a winter excursion or seeing ice castles.

Perspective

Think about what is good about this time of year. If you are cold, you are still warmer than somewhere else in the world. One day may be better than the next. The sound of rain in the winter can remind you that spring is coming. When stuck indoors from a snowstorm, why not enjoy being stuck with free time, no errands, and hot cocoa? When it is cold, no bugs are biting you! Plan your year to include projects that you can do in the winter.

Outside things are dormant and we feel that lack of energy, but we don’t have to dwell there. Just as this is a season to come inside more often, we too must come inside of ourselves and purposely turn on the light.

…..And remember, you can always call a life coach!
