When tragic events cause us all to grieve
Episode 36 of Find Your Center with Life Coach Kim Perone
Finding our center in times of tragedy in our personal lives, and in times when world events shock and horrify us, is exceptionally difficult. We may feel like we are falling into a dark abyss or we may be stoic and numb then crumble at unpredictable times. We feel anger, frustration, helpless and sometimes, even hopeless.
In this newsletter, I am sharing information from grief expert David Kessler, Grief.com and in the above episode of my podcast Find Your Center. How can we support each other as we grieve collectively? I would like to share these tips and I hope that you will find them helpful.
- Express your grief and listen to those around you as they express theirs.
- Remember, we all grieve differently. Not everyone experiences collective grief with the same intensity.
- Engage with others, even if only online. The antidote to isolation is community.
- Think local. The communities that are affected directly have resources nearby in the short term. What can you do in your home, neighborhood, and town?
- Think small. Sometimes a hug can mean everything at times like these. Bake cookies. Pick flowers. Say hello to your neighbors. Call a friend.
- Self-care. How are you taking care of yourself?
- Take media breaks. The news can be overwhelming. Get outside. Move your body. Take a deep breath.
- Finding meaning can take the form of taking an action to prevent tragedies in the future.
The past 3 weeks have been triggering, maddening, and confusing. As a coach, I see far more good in the world than bad. I also see the need for more action. May we all find ways to take action, in small and great ways, to love more deeply, build a better world, heal ourselves, watch out for each other, and find the greater good for all.
